I’m afraid Lada will lose her soul entirely. Watching Radu pine toward Mehmed makes me want to cry, but I am afraid of what Lada’s broken, confused heart will do if she does not have Mehmed to care for. 🙂 I was venting to my husband because, before Lada and Mehmed got together, I was totally shipping Radu and Mehmed! Now, I am torn between loyalties toward both siblings. He was so innocent and sweet in his affection toward Mehmed at the beginning of the book, but I could see what was in his heart. Oh Radu, the poor, lovesick little puppy. I don’t think he could have accomplished that without Lada’s push- even though I hated her for it in the moment. Her rude, and sometimes downright evil, behavior towards Radu really shaped him into the conniving little manipulator that he is by the end of the book.

She never did anything without a purpose, and she always seemed to be plotting a few steps ahead of everyone else. As I kept reading, I realized the pain and struggle that Lada felt which led to her cruelness. At first, I thought Lada was a brutal, annoying brat who was too mean and basically didn’t have a heart. I really did enjoy this book, although it truthfully took me a long time to get into the story.

I can’t wait to see where Kiersten White takes the story in the next book, Now I Rise. I recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy with a touch of history! The story is gruesome at times with a few crude scenes, so I would not recommend this book for anyone under sixteen. I enjoyed watching Lada and Radu’s personalities grow as they developed an interesting relationship with Mehmed, the third and least favorite son of the Sultan. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The complicated court matters and the brutal wars were thrilling, and I was impressed by the depth of the story. In this dark, compelling story, follow Lada and Radu as they grow into persuasive adults who may hold the power of the ancient empire in their hands. When their father betrays them, Radu and Lada must join forces to protect each other in the foreign Ottoman Empire, but can they protect their hearts as well as their souls?
